In short what I am saying is never say NO:
Agree to do any contract regardless of the proposed day date.
Agree to do any contract regardless of the location.
Agree to do any contract regardless of the deliverables, the role, the responsibilities.
THEN put a few of your own conditions on your acceptance.
Let me explain by using a ridiculous example:-
BOSS: John we would like to offer you a one weeks contract, shoveling slurry, for 6p a day, in Siberia.
YOU: Yes I would love to.
BOSS: Great.
YOU: I just have a few conditions, I would like a 6 months contract, managing the finance department in Solihull and my day rate is £600 a day.
BOSS: So you’re saying no.
YOU: I am saying Yes, and then negotiating my terms and conditions.
Now while the above is extreme the following isn’t:
BOSS: John we would like to offer you a three months contract, managing finance, for £500 a day.
YOU: Yes I would love to.
BOSS: Great.
YOU: However my day rate if £600. OR However I am looking for a 6 months contract. etc
